Malnutrition Coding

The coding of malnutrition poses coding challenges as it is often poorly documented by the physician.  Coding professionals will then often misinterpret the ICD codes when translating this poor documentation into diagnosis codes.  The codes for Kwashiorkor malnutrition have been over reported in the United States and are a focus of review by the Office or Inspector General (OIG).
